Homogeneous and heterogeneous flashvacuumpyrolysis (fvp) reactions of 2-(1H-1,2,3-benzotriazol-1-yl)phenylethanone (1) are reported. Heterogeneous reactions were carried out with Al-MCM-41 catalysts, mesoporous molecular sieves of the type M41S. In both cases, 7H-dibenzo[b,d]azepin-7-one (4) was the major product; however, in the catalytic reactions, yields and selectivity were very high. A mechanism

HBF4 catalyzed Mannich-type reaction took place smoothly in aqueous media to afford beta-amino carbonyl compounds in high yields. One-pot synthesis of beta-amino carbonyl compounds from aldehyde and amine also worked well.

Heating of 1-phenyl-2-(phenylamino)ethanone in a water-ethanol solution of potassium carbonate gave rise to (Z)-1,4-diphenyl-2-phenylamino-2-butene-1,4-dione; it formed most probably by reaction of the initial aminoketone with its oxidation product, 1-phenyl-2-(phenylimino)ethanone.
