  oxidation of p-cresol with tert-butyl hydroperoxide, in hexafluoro-2-propanol/toluene gave toluquinone efficiently. The reaction can be applied to the regio-selective short-step syntheses of vitamin K3 and vitamin K1 from p-cresol.
