conditions, were used together to determine the structure of the D-ring and the sidechain of 20-oxo and 20-hydroxy pregnane(ene)s without oxo groups on the A-, B-, and C-ring. All possible combinations of D-ring and sidechain configuration were considered. Most fragmentations could be interpreted as partial or complete D-ring cleavages with loss of the sidechain, aided by comparison with spectra of deuterated
yield of about 30 mg per 1000 kg glands. It appears to act under certain biological conditions as a sodium excreting factor. This compound is shown to be 3β,16α-dihydroxy-allopregnan-20-one; several syntheses of it as well as a number of derivatives are described.

Some new compounds, including 3α, 16α-dihydroxy-pregnan-20-one (I) and 3α, 16α-dihydroxy-allopregnan-20-one (III), have been isolated from urine of patients with clinically compensated adrenogenital salt-losing syndrome. Compound I seems to be responsible for the original salt loss. This effect could be demonstrated under certain conditions in male adrenalectomized rats. Compound III was also isolated
