  New dihalogen osmium(VI) complexes of pinacol (tetramethylglycol) are simply accessible by reaction of AlX3 (X = Cl, Br) with oxobis(pinacolato)osmium(VI). Alkylation by means of dialkylzinc reagents yields compounds containing two cis-oriented alkyl groups in place of the halogen ligands. The perfluorophenyl derivative has become available along this route for the first time.
