The first total synthesis of bipolaramide was achieved in 47% overall yield from (2S__-)-2, 3-dihydroindole-2-carboxylic acid in three steps, utilizing thallium chemistry. Some derivatives, with dihalogeno or dialkenyl substituents at the 4 and 11 positions of (6aS__--cis)-6a, 7, 13a, 14-tetrahydropyrazino[1, 2-a : 4, 5-a']diindole-6, 13-dione have also prepared.
