  Various S-methyl dithiocarbonates of tertiary and secondary alcohols are readily deoxygenated in high isolated yields by radical deoxygenation with di-n-butylphosphine oxide and various radical initiators in boiling dioxane. Primary alcohols react similarly in boiling xylenes.

  Novel radical-chain deoxygenations of primary alcohols are described. The alcohols are acylated with the reagents pentafluorophenyl chlorothionoformate, 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl chlorothionoformate and 4-fluorophenyl chlorothionoformate and the intermediate thionocarbonates are deoxygenated with tributyltin hydride, triphenylsilane, diphenylsilane or phenylsilane in high-yielding reactions.

  Secondary alcohols were transformed into various thiocarbonyl derivatives. Reduction of these compounds using tributyltin hydride and an initiator afforded the corresponding deoxy-compounds. Half-life and competitive measurements showed that all these reactions were fast and could be run to completion.
