The cathodic reduction of 2,2-disubstituted-3-oxopropyl trichloroacetates in dichloromethane/tetraethylammonium chloride yields 3,3-dichloro-4-hydroxy-5,5-disubstituted-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-ones or alternatively, depending on the workup, 3-chloro-4-hydroxy-5,5-disubstituted-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-ones.
