phenylazo-substituted derivatives of pyridyl-benzimidazoles L1–L5 has been synthesized via a modified Mills reaction and their structural, spectral and photoswitching properties were investigated. Simple, rapid one-step oxidation of shelf-stable N-Boc- and N,N'-bis-Boc-diarylhydrazines with (diacetoxyiodo)benzene provides unsymmetrical diaryldiazenes, arylazopyridines and tris(arylazo)benzenes in good to excellent yields. The method allows fast and selective access to variously substituted di(hetero)aryldiazenes.
