    Disclosed herein are polymeric materials such as a coating, a plastic, a laminate, a composite, an elastomer, an adhesive, or a sealant; a surface treatment such as a textile finish or a wax; a filler for such a polymeric material or a surface treatment that includes an enzyme such as an esterase (e.g., a lipolytic enzyme, a sulfuric ester hydrolase, an organophosphorus compound degradation enzyme), an enzyme (e.g., a lysozyme, a lytic transglycosylase) that degrades a cell wall and/or a cell membrane component, a biocidal or biostatic peotide, and/or a peptidase. Also disclosed herein are methods of altering a material's property such as service life, flexability, or rigidity, by incorporation of an enzyme into a material capable of being chemically crosslinked by the activity of a lipolytic enzyme, a hydrolase, and/or a urease.

    Fully cured reinforced molded resins such as polyester, polyurea-urethane, polyurea, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, polyepoxy and polycarbonate resins can be in-mold coated to cover surface defects such as sink marks and microcracks with an improved coating composition comprising 5-94% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated base resin free of groups reactive with isocyanate radicals; 5-94% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer free of groups reactive with isocyanate radicals; and 1-20% by weight of isocyanate-containing compounds or compounds which decompose to form free isocyanate-containing compounds. Such coatings unexpectedly have improved adherence to molded articles over those obtained from similar compositions which contain no free isocyanate. The compositions may contain minor amounts of emulsifiers, fillers, catalysts, cross-linking agents, dryers and pigments. In particular, the coatings obtained when the compositions contain electroconductive fillers can be painted by standard electrostatic paint techniques.

    A fire-retardant polyolefin composition having an excellent surface blush resistance is obtained by compounding: 100 parts of a resin component containing as the major components: a) 99 to 60 wt % of a polyolefin resin and b) 1 to 40 wt % of an olefin polymer modified with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivative; c) 5 to 200 parts of a fire-retardant; and d) (1) mineral oil, wax or a paraffin, (2) a higher fatty acid or its ester, amide or metal salt, (3) silicone, (4) a polyhydric alcohol partially esterified with fatty acid, or an alkylene oxide adduct of aliphatic alcohol, fatty acid, aliphatic amine, fatty acid amide, alkylphenol or alkylnaphthol, and (5) a fluorinated elastomer.

    Economical and efficient processes for producing an α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acid heterocycle-inserted ester and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid polyheteroalkylene ester as well as a catalyst suited for use in economically and efficiently producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester are provided. The invention provides (1) a process for producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester which comprises reacting an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester with a heterocyclic compound, (2) a process for producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester which comprises reacting an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid with a heterocyclic compound in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor and a metal oxide catalyst, and (3) a catalyst for the production of an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester    comprising a metal oxide.
