A Ru carbene (8, Scheme 2) that contains an internal metal-oxygen chelate is an active metathesis catalyst and is readily obtained by the sequential treatment of Cl2Ru(PPh3)(3) with (2-isopropoxyphenyl)-diazomethane and PCy3. This Ru-carbene complex offers excellent stability to air and moisture and can be recycled in high yield by silica gel column chromatography. The structures of this and related complexes have been unambiguously established by NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.
The present application provides, among other things, compounds and methods for metathesis reactions. In some embodiments, provided compounds promote highly efficient and highly Z-selective metathesis. In some embodiments, provided compounds and methods are particularly useful for producing allyl alcohols. In some embodiments, provided compounds have the structure of formula I. In some embodiments, provided compounds comprise ruthenium, and a ligand bonded to ruthenium through a sulfur atom.

Addition of monosubstituted diazoalkanes, N(2)CHR (R = Ph, p-Tolyl, (t)Bu, Cy), to the bis(imino)pyridine iron dinitrogen complex, ((iPr)PDI)Fe(N(2))(2), at 23 degrees C in benzene-d(6) resulted in rapid cleavage of the N-N bond to yield the iron nitrile and imine complexes, ((iPr)PDI)FeNCR and ((iPr)PDI)FeHNCHR, respectively. Aryl azines were also cleaved with ((iPr)PDI)Fe(N(2))(2) and yielded the

An olefin metathesis process involving contacting an unsaturated fatty acid ester or unsaturated fatty acid, such as methyloleate or oleic acid, with a lower olefin, preferably ethylene, in the presence of a metathesis catalyst so as to prepare a first product olefin, preferably, a reduced chain α-olefin, such as methyl-9-decenoate or 9-decenoic acid, respectively. The metathesis catalyst contains ruthenium or osmium and a chelating ligand, preferably, a chelating ligand containing a carbene moiety and a second donor moiety of a Group 15 or 16 element Optionally, the catalyst can be supported on a catalyst support, such as, a cross-linked polymeric resin.
