  The synthesis of three derivatives of phenylbutazone with a hydroxy group in the butyl side chain is described, among them γ-hydroxy-phenylbutazone [1, 2-diphenyl-4-(γ-hydroxy-n-butyl)-pyrazolidine-3,5-dione] (IV), the laevo-rotatory isomer of which is one of the metabolites of phenylbutazone in man.
