    The invention relates to an optical recording medium comprising a substrate, a reflecting layer and a recording layer, wherein the recording layer comprises a compound of formula preferably a compound of formula or a mesomeric or tautomeric form thereof, wherein A h+ is an organic cation having h quaternary ammonium or phosphonium groups; Q 1 is N or CR 15 , Q 2 is N or CR 16 , Q 3 , Q 5 and Q 7 are each independently of the other CR 17 R 18 , O, S or NR 19 , Q 4 is CR 13 or N and Q 6 is CR 14 or N; and one of R 1 and R 3 is OR 17 , OR 20 , SR 17 , SR 20 , NR 17 R 18 , NR 18 R 20 or NR 20 R 21 , and the other of R 1 and R 3 is O − , S − or N − R 22 . The compounds of formula (I) and (II) are novel and also claimed, as well as mixtures thereof with metal complexes. The optical recording media are remarkably suitable for DVD±R (658 nm), especially at high recording speeds.

    An optical recording medium on which high-density recording and reading of optical information can be conducted by a short-wavelength light such as a blue laser beam is provided. In an optical recording medium comprising at least a substrate and a recording layer thereon that can record or read information by irradiation with light, the recording layer contains an azacyanine dye represented by general formula [I]: wherein R 1 and R 2 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted linear or branched alkyl group having one to four carbon atoms; R 3 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group; R 4 represents a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl group having one to four carbon atoms; R 5 represents an optionally substituted aromatic ring group or an optionally substituted unsaturated heterocyclic group; R 4 and R 5 may be combined together to form a ring; X − represents a counter anion; and the benzene ring A may be optionally substituted.
