    the side groups generated an optical anisotropy in all the LCP films, but the amplitude depended on the alkylene spacer length and the type of the polymer main chain. The photoirradiated films were transparent in the visible region because the photoreacted products expressed less color. The axis-selective photoreaction of films followed by the thermally generated self-organization processes effectively

    A ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer comprising the recurring units represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## in which k is an integer of from 1 to 30, R.sub.1 is ##STR2## R.sub.2 is --COOR.sub.3, --OCOR.sub.3, --OR.sub.3, or --R.sub.3, in which R.sub.3 is ##STR3## R.sub.4 is --CH.sub.3 or Cl, m is 0 or an integar of from 1 to 10, n is 0 or an integar of from 1 to 10, providing that n is not 0, when R.sub.4 is --CH.sub.3. The ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer of the present invention not only exhibits a ferroelectricity even at temperatures in the vicinity of a room temperature, but also has so fast response speed to the external factors as to be able to display motion pictures, and may be advantageously used as display elements for large size screens and a curved screens.

  • Novel Supramolecular Side-Chain Banana-Shaped Liquid Crystalline Polymers Containing Covalent- and Hydrogen-Bonded Bent Cores

    Novel supramolecular side-chain banana-shaped liquid crystalline (LC) polymer complexes AmBn-N bearing various (m/n) molar ratios of hydrogen- and covalent-bonded bent-core components were acquired by the free radical polymerization, where the hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) structures were executed via mixing equimolar portions of proton donor (H-donor) polymers AmBn (homopolymers/copolymers) and pyridyl proton acceptor (H-acceptor) bent cores (small molecules). The influences of the molar ratios of bent-core H-bonded components in side-chain banana-shaped LC polymers and their corresponding polymer complexes on mesomorphic and electro-optical properties were first investigated. The voltage-dependent antiferroelectric properties of spontaneous polarization (Ps) values in the polar smectic phase of the supramolecular side-chain banana-shaped copolymers were also reported. The nematic and tilted smectic phases were verified by XRD measurements, and the SmCp phase was further confirmed by the triangular wave method. Suprinsingly, a novel enantiotropic polar smectic (SmCPA) phase was generated in some bent-core side-chain polymer complexes AmBn-N. Therefore, a special approach to constructing (or stabilizing) the SmCP phase was first developed in this study by copolymerization of bent-core covalent - and H-bonded units in side-chain polymer complexes (with proper m/n molar ratios of 16/1 and 10/1 from both bent-core covalent- and H-bonded monomers (i.e., B and A-N units, respectively) without the SmCP phase.

    A novel polymerizable monomer is provided. A novel liquid crystal composition which can be used in a variety of liquid crystal devices is provided using the polymerizable monomer. The use of the novel liquid crystal composition makes it possible to reduce driving voltage of a liquid crystal element and to reduce power consumption of a liquid crystal display device. A polymerizable monomer represented by General Formula (G1) is provided. A liquid crystal composition which includes a polymerizable monomer represented by General Formula (H1), a nematic liquid crystal, and a chiral material is also provided. In General Formulae (G1) and (H1), n and m are individually an integer from 1 to 20, and R 1 and R 2 individually represent hydrogen or a methyl group. In General Formulae (G1), k is 2 or 3.
