Grignard reagents with N-alkylated indole-3-carboxaldehyde has been observed. Contrary to the usual formation of an alcohol, it afforded an unusual bis(indolyl)methane product. A systematic study on this new mode of reactivity and its application to a synthesis of the potent antibiotic turbomycin B and vibrindole A derivatives is reported.

A facile acid-catalyzed acylation of indoles with 1,3-dione as an eco-friendly acylating agent was developed. This protocol combines C-C bond cleavage and heterocyclic C-H bond functionalization to form new C-C bonds. Based on the detailed mechanistic studies, a credible mechanistic pathway was proposed.

Rhenium-Catalyzed Regiodivergent Addition of Indoles to Terminal Alkynes

An efficient rhenium-catalyzed site-switchable addition of indoles to terminal alkynes is described. A variety of bisindolylalkane derivatives are expeditiously synthesized in high yields with excellent regioselectivity. Preliminary mechanistic study sheds light on the observed regiodivergent addition.
