  A foamable and simultaneously curable polyester composition is disclosed, said composition consisting essentially of, all parts being by weight: (a) 100 parts liquid unsaturated polyester resin; (b) 0.5 to 10 parts monosubstituted sulfonyl hydrazide having the formula RS02NHNH2, wherein R is C1-C12 alkyl, C6-C6 cycloalkyl, C2-C10 aralkyl, phenyl, naphthyl, or phenyl substituted with halogen, C1-C12 alkyl or C1-C12 alkoxy; (c) 0.1 to 5.0 parts of a promoter, said promoter consisting essentially of a mixture of organic heavy metal salt and organic alkali metal salt, wherein the heavy metal/ alkali metal molar ratio is from 1011 to 1/10; (d) 0 to 2 parts surfactant; (e) 0 to 250 parts of filler; and (f) 0.3 to 5 parts of a cross-linking initiating compound selected from organic peroxides and organic hydroperoxide. Methods for preparing a foamed and cured polyester resin, making use of the above composition, are also described.

  A starter system for polymerization of unsaturated monomers in a nonaqueous media is provided. The starter system comprises a peroxide compound (0.02% to 7%), an organic hydrazine derivative (0.005% to 3%) and a transition metal ion (1 to 1000 ppm) the concentation based on the polymerization mixture as a whole. The starter system prevents rapid polymerization and development of heat in the polymerization system at the beginning of the polymerization. The preferred nonaqueous solvents are aromatic hydrocarbons.
