The synthesis of fluorine‐18 labelled fluoroform was optimized towards high molar activities of close to 100 GBq/µmol. This was achieved by implementing a novel radiofluorination reagent, [18F]triflyl fluoride, which allowed 100‐fold reduction of base and cryptand amounts in the radiofluorination reaction.

Herein, we describe a valuable method for the introduction of the [18F]CF3 group into arenes with highly improved specific activity by the reaction of [18F]trifluoromethane with aryliodides or aryl boronic acids. This [18F]trifluoromethylation reaction is the first to be described in which the [18F]CF3 products are generated in actual trace amounts and can therefore effectively be used as PET tracers

Described herein are labeling agents, specifically [11C]fluoroform, [11C]difluoromethane, [11C]fluoromethyl iodide, [11C]fluoromethyl bromide, [11C]fluoromethyl chloride, [11C]fluoromethyl trifluoromethansulfonate, [11C]difluoromethyl iodide, [11C]difluoromethyl bromide, [11C]difluoromethyl chloride, [11C]difluoromethyl trifluoromethansulfonate, [11C]trifluoromethyl iodide, [11C]trifluoromethyl bromide, [11C]trifluoromethyl chloride, [11C]trifluoromethyl trifluoromethansulfonate, [18F]fluoroform, [18F]difluoromethane, [18F]difluoromethyl bromide or [18F]trifluoromethyl bromide. Also included are methods of labeling precursors to provide labeled fluoroalkanes and imaging methods.

A new strategy towards [18F]trifluoromethyl-containing compounds is developed. [18F]trifluoromethane is synthesised in a fast and efficient manner and subsequently used in the reaction with aldehydes and ketones forming [18F]trifluoromethyl carbinols in good yields.
