cyclobutanes and silylsubstituted cyclopropanes in moderate yields. Upon Si−C bond oxidation the cyclopropanes are converted directly to 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds, thus demonstrating the formal acylanion chemistry of acyl polysilanes.

The elucidation of a robust and reliable sequence for the generation of highly reactive transient silenes from simple aldehydes is described. The key step involves a silyl-modified Peterson olefination which critically depends on the presence of a sub-stoichiometric amount of soluble lithium salts (LiBr).

The reaction of acylpolysilanes with TMSOT and TMS(NTf2) proceed via a series of 1,2 silyl and silyoxy shifts to afford the silanol products 5 and 6 respectively. A unified mechanistic pathway involving the formation of transient silenium ion complexes and silenes which rationalises these products is proposed. The structural assignment of the products is supported by X-ray structures for the phenyl 6a and trifluoromethylphenyl 6b substituted silanols.
