to 2,4-dimethoxy-5-ethynylpyrimidine (II) which was silylated by t-butyl lithium and chlorotrimethylsilane to 2,4-dimethoxy-5-β-trimethylsilyl)ethynylpyrimidine (IV). Compound IV on deblocking with trimethylsilyl iodide yielded 5-(β-trimethylsilyl)ethynyluracil (V), which on treatment with sodium hydroxide in methanol was converted to 5-ethynyluracil (VI).
