A synthesis of diaboline (N(a)-acetyl-Wieland-Gumlich aldehyde) is described. Rotational and spectral arguments are employed in a discussion of the configuration of the C-17 center of the Wieland-Gumlich aldehyde and some of its derivatives. These results are explained in terms of a conformational analysis of these compounds.
