  A method is disclosed for improving the physical properties of a silica-filled rubber composition which comprises mixing (i) 100 parts by weight of at least one sulfur vulcanizable elastomer selected from conjugated diene homopolymers and copolymers, natural rubber and copolymers of at least one conjugated diene and aromatic vinyl compound; (ii) 10 to 250 phr of silica; and (iii) .05 to 10 phr of a mixture of dithiodipropionic acid, trithiodipropionic acid and tetrathiodipropionic acid. Addition of the mixture of dithiodipropionic acid, trithiodipropionic acid and tetrathiodipropionic acid to silica-reinforced sulfur vulcanizable rubber improves the vulcanizate properties.

  In order to manufacture a thiol compound by causing reaction between an unsaturated compound and hydrogen sulfide, the unsaturated compound and the thiol compound being expressed by following formulas (1) and (2), respectively:         CH2 = CR1 - COOR2     (1)         HS - CH2 - CHR1 - COOR2     (2) where R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (i) at least one nitrogen containing compound which is selected from the group consisting of amide compounds each having an amide group without a substituent, amide compounds each having an amide group whose nitrogen atom has a substituent hydrocarbon group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, urea compounds each having an ureylene group without a substituent, and urea compounds in each of which at least one of two nitrogen atoms (N, N') has a substituent hydrocarbon group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and (ii) either a polysulfide compound or sulfur, or the both, are made to coexist in a system of reaction, the polysulfide compound being expressed by a following formula (3):         R4OOC - CHR3 - CH2 - SX - CH2 - CHR3 - COOR4     (3) where R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R4 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and x represents an integral number of 2 to 5.   The invention relates to articles of manufacture, such as for example, tires and industrial products, which have at least one component comprised of a rubber composition which contains particles of pre-sulfur vulcanized rubber (e.g. ground recycled rubber) and impure tetrathiodipropionic acid, namely a blend comprised primarily of tetrathiodipropionic acid and trithiodipropionic acids of a weight ratio thereof in a range of about 80/20 to about 30/70. Said blend is referred to herein as an S4/S3 blend. The S4/S3 blend may be introduced directly to a rubber composition or may be provided as particles of a composite of said S4/S3 and a particulate support therefor for a purpose of aiding the dispersion of the S4 and S3 within the elastomer host. Representative of such support, or carrier, may be, for example, silica, particularly amorphous precipitated silica, carbon black, clay, starch, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, titanium dioxide and the like, wherein carbon black is preferred. It is considered herein that an advantageous nature of the invention is to provide such an S4/S3 blend, for example, in a manner to somewhat depress the melting point of the trithiodipropionic acid and therefore promote its processability and incorporation with particles of pre-vulcanized rubber without substantially degrading any beneficial effect thereof. Thus, the invention is intended to be exclusive of use of 100 percent pure tetrathiodipropionic acid and exclusive of relatively high purity trithiodipropionic acid which contains at least 80 percent trithiodipropionic acid.

  The present invention relates to a pneumatic tire with a built-in depolymerized sealant layer. The built-in sealant layer is of a composition comprising a partially depolymerized butyl rubber or alternatively a composite of partially depolymerized butyl rubber, together with partially depolymerized cis 1,4-polyisoprene rubber and/or partially depolymerized liquid polyisoprene polymer, which contains a pre-hydrophobated silica. The sealant layer may also contain a colorant of a non-black color which produces a built-in sealant layer of a color which contrasts with a black. The butyl rubber-based sealant precursor is built into the tire as a layer to form a tire assembly including such sealant precursor layer wherein the butyl rubber or butyl rubber-based composite portion of the sealant precursor layer is at least partially depolymerized during a subsequent curing of the tire at an elevated temperature in a suitable mold to form the tire having the resultant built-in sealant layer.
