  4-Novel hydroxyanthrones of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.11 and R.sup.17 are as set forth in the specification. AND A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 4-HYDROXYANTHRONES WHEREIN (2-HALOGENO-METHYL)-PHENYL HALOFORMATES OF THE FORMULA ##STR2## wherein R.sup.5 -R.sup.7 are as set forth in the specification are reacted, with an aromatic carbocyclic compound of the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 are as set forth in the specification in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, optionally in a solvent, at a temperature in the range of from 0.degree. to 300.degree. C.
