    Phosphoranyl radicals as reducing agents: SRN1 chains with onium salts and neutral nucleophiles

    Redox radical chain reactions of trivalent organophosphorus compounds (PZ3) with diaryliodonium (Ar2I+) and triarylsulfonium (Ar3S+) salts to give arylphosphonium (ArP+Z3) salts and iodoarenes (ArI) or diaryl sulfides (Ar2S) are reported. The key propagation step in these SRNI reactions is a single-electron reduction of the onium salts by intermediate phosphoranyl radicals (ArPZ3). The observation of competitions between solvent molecules and phosphine establishes the intermediacy of free aryl radicals and allows estimates of rate constants for addition of p-tolyl radicals to triphenylphosphine (k almost-equal-to 3 x 10(8) M-1 s-1) and to trimethyl phosphite (k almost-equal-to 2 x 10(8) M-1 s-1). The intermediate phosphoranyl radicals can also partition between competitive reaction pathways; the aryltributylphosphoranyl radical, ArPBu3, for example, partitions between unimolecular alpha-cleavage of butyl radical and chain-propagating electron transfer to diaryliodonium salt. The relative amounts of these two pathways allows an estimate of the rate constant for electron transfer, k(SET) almost-equal-to 4 X 10(9) M-1 s-1.

    Several aldehyde and ketone phenylhydrazones were electrooxidized in MeOH. Electrooxidation in the presence of KI or tetraethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate as the supporting electrolyte afforded the corresponding methoxy(phenylazo)alkanes. whereas electrooxidation in the presence of KI, NaCN, and HOAc afforded the cyano(phenylazo)alkanes.

  • Soft high oxygen permeability opthalmic lens

    A low water contact lens material having high 0₂ permeability, a lower water content and reduced polymer matrix size provides adequate O₂ to the cornea, but does not wick water away from the eye nor allow protein or other tear components to penetrate and deposit in the lens. Such a lens is made by polymerizing and crosslinking a prepolymer which contains a cyclic polyol with polyalkylether segments containing curable segments. The cyclic polyols consist of alkoxylated glucose or sucrose which are then reacted with an isocyanate to produce an ultraviolet curable prepolymer. The prepolymer is then placed in a mold and polymerized by exposure to ultraviolet light. The free hydroxyl groups of the material react with a highly hydrophilic reagent to form covalent bonds thus making the surface of the material more wettable.

    The present invention provides soft contact lenses adopted for placement over the cornea or in the eye which have a high oxygen permeability, a low water content and excellent mechanical properties. Moreover, the lenses of the instant invention have excellent protein and lipid deposition resistance relative to conventional contact lenses. Such lenses having the properties mentioned above comprises a prepolymer which contains an alkoxylate glucoside that is derivatized with at least one polysiloxane compound. The prepolymer is then placed in a suitable mold and polymerized by exposure to ultraviolet light.
