Using the Passerini and Ugi reactions as representative tests, the utility of several alpha-substituted ketones R-CO-CH(2)-X (X = sulfonyloxy, acyloxy, azido, halo, hydroxy, and sulfonyl) in isonitrile-based multicomponent reactions was explored. A variety of terminal alkynes were efficiently converted into the corresponding α-mesyloxy ketones through gold-catalyzedintermolecular oxidation in the presence of 3,5-dichloropyridine N-oxide as the oxidant. The reaction is proposed to proceed via α-oxo gold carbene intermolecular O–H insertion.
