    Contraction of side-on nematic liquid crystalline elastomers micropillars: Influence of molecular parameters

    We investigated the structure-property relationship of nematic liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) actuators obtained from a series of nematic side-on monomers. The liquid crystalline acrylate monomers were designed and synthesized with different tail lengths. Combining a soft lithography technique with photo-polymerization/photo-crosslinking of aligned nematic liquid crystalline monomers and crosslinkers, nematic LCE micropillars were obtained, based on the new monomers. Through microscopic observation, influence of some structural parameters on the thermo-mechanical behavior of the micropillars was investigated. The thermo-mechanical behavior of the LCEs showed a close correlation with to the tail length of the monomer and the spacer length of the crosslinker.

    Effect of molecular parameters on thermomechanical behavior of side-on nematic liquid crystal elastomers

    We investigated the structure-property relationship of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) obtained from a series of nematic side-on monomers. A new synthetic strategy was developed to obtain the acrylate monomers (n-ADBB), which gave us the opportunity to easily modify the spacer lengths of the monomers. Through magnetic field alignment, well-defined LCE micropillars were fabricated from the monomers by a method combining soft lithography and photopolymerization/photocrosslinking of the monomers and a crosslinker. The influence of structural parameters on the thermomechanical deformation of the microstructures was studied through microscopic observations. The study quantitatively revealed the correlation of thermomechanical behavior of the microstructured LCEs with the crosslinking density and length of the flexible spacer linking the mesogenic core to the backbone. With a proper control of the structural parameters, optimized performances such as large reversible contraction, good elasticity and mechanical robustness were demonstrated for this type of LCEs.     The present invention provides a new polymerizable compound which is represented by Formula (I). In the formula, R1 indicates an alkyl group or the like, A represents a (m+n)valent cyclic group, L1 indicates a single bond or the like, L2 indicates —COO— or the like, Z indicates —COO— or the like, Sp indicates an alkylene group, an alkyleneoxy group, or the like, Q indicates a polymerizable group such as a (meth)acryloyl groups, 1 indicates an integer of 0 to 2, m indicates an integer of 1 or 2, and n indicates an integer of 1 to 3. The present invention also provides a polymerizable composition which includes the polymerizable compound described above, a film which is formed from the polymerizable composition described above, and a half mirror for displaying a projection image which includes the film described above. Using the polymerization composition described above, it is possible to manufacture films such as a low birefringence retardation film and a reflection film with high reflection wavelength region selectivity.
