The reaction of methyl 2-chloro-5-ethoxycarbonylamino-4-fluorobenzoate (4a) and 1-bromo-3, 3-dimethyl-2-butanone (2) in the presence of 2.2 eq of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide afforded the 4H-1, 4-benzoxazine (6a) in good yield instead of the expected 4-oxazolin-2-one (5a). The generality of the reaction and the mechanism are discussed.

Disclosed herein is a process for producing a sulfoneamide represented by the following formula (6) as an intermediate of a 6-haloalkyl-3-phenyluracil derivative, from as a starting material 4-halogeno-3-nitroaniline (9) or 2-halogeno-5-nitroaniline (10): ##STR1## (wherein X and Y independently represent a halogen atom, R represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 haloalkyl group and R' represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a phenyl group).
