Rates of cleavage of arylalkylthioethers attached to acetyl-cysteine-methylamide and forming cations or olefins were measured under conditions usual in peptide chemistry in TFA, 5·5 m or 0·2 m HBr/glacial acetic acid and in iodine/methanoi. In 5·5 m HBr/glacial acetic acid trityl, α-methylbenzhydryl and α,α-dimethylbenzyl were removed quickly and almost independently of benzhydryl or 4,4′-dimethoxybenzhydryl
