Whereas free phenols are rapidly oxidised by ruthenium tetroxide with fragmentation, the aromatic nuclei of their O-trifluoroacetates are unaffected by the reagent in dry conditions. This has led to a method for the controlled oxidation of functionalised phenols which is demonstrated here by the selective cleavage of hydroxyarylalkenes, coumarins and aromatic steroidal alkenes.
