A base-promoted transition metal-free approach to substituted alkenes using alcohols under aerobic conditions using air as the inexpensive and clean oxidant is described. Aldehydes are relatively difficult to handle compared to corresponding alcohols due to their volatility and penchant to polymerize and autoxidize. Wittig ylides are easily oxidized to aldehydes and consequently form homo-olefination
A catalyst composed of an organic phosphorus compound having a trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus atom and at least one carbon-phosphorus bonding or a combination of the organic phosphorus compound and a halogen atom-containing compound is effective for decarbonylation, that is, for releasing carbon monoxide from a compound containing a moiety of -CO-CO-O- in its molecular structure.

structures. In the solid state all ethynyl dyads have the aromatic ring orthogonal to the ferrocenyl cyclopentadienyl rings, whereas calculations predict a coplanar orientation. Calculated and observed structures agree for the ethenyl dyads with the rings orthogonal and coplanar for the anthryl and pyrenyl dyads, respectively. In most cases the solid-state structures are stabilized by offset π-stacking
