The present invention provide a catalyst capable of producing an aromatic aldehyde by gas-phase oxidation of the corresponding alkylbenzene in the presence of a molecular oxygen in high yield, and a method of producing an aromatic aldehyde from the corresponding alkylbenzene in high yield by using the above catalyst.

Silylethynyl pentacenes and compositions containing silylethynyl pentacenes are disclosed. Exemplary pentacene compounds have 6, 13 -silylethynyl substitution with one or more groups (e.g., R, R' and R") covalently bonded to each Si atom of the silylethynyl groups. Methods of making and using silylethynyl pentacenes and compositions containing silylethynyl pentacenes are also disclosed. Substrates and devices comprising the silylethynyl pentacenes and compositions are also disclosed.

A series of substituted ortho-phthalaldehydes were prepared under mild conditions in respectable yields by oxidation of the corresponding dimethanols using oxalyl chloride activated dimethyl sulfoxide.
For the preparation of 3-alkoxyphthalides from phthalaldehydes and alcohols, a cyclization reaction in the presence of a rhodium(III) catalyst and copper(II) salt is reported. Cyclization of phthalaldehydes also occurs with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds under similar conditions to produce 3-substituted phthalides in good yields. An acylrhodium(III) species might be a key intermediate in these cyclization
