Lanthanide bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imides as a kind of effective catalyst were used in quaternary ammonium ionic liquids to afford a useful new method for the nitration of substituted benzenes with concentrated nitric acid (95%) as nitrating agent. The less expensive lanthanum bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide was found to be the most effective catalyst employed in the ionic liquid tributylammonium
