Conversely, for VCPs with bulky R groups, such as ortho-substituted aryl rings or branched alkyl residues, ring opening is the exclusive reaction pathway. This finding is explained by the thwarted hydride delivery to a sterically shielded, β-silicon-stabilized cyclopropylcarbinyl cation intermediate.
