A novel optically active quarternary ammonium salt with an axial chirality, which is useful as a phase-transfer catalyst with which a glycine derivative is stereoselectively alkylated to convert it into an optically active α-amino acid derivative, is disclosed. The quarternary ammonium salt of the present invention is, for example, a compound represented by the formula (I). Furthermore, the quarternary ammonium salt of the present invention can be used as a phase-transfer catalyst to stereoselectively alkylate a compound having a defined structure.
