    Polymeric light stabilizers are provided having at least one 2,2,6,6-tetraalkyl piperidyl group in the molecule and a molecular weight within the range from about 1000 to about 20,000, that are polymers of an unsaturated carboxylic acid ester selected from the group consisting of unsaturated cycloaliphatic mono-, di-, and tri-carboxylic acid esters having from seven to about thirty carbon atoms; unsaturated branched-chain aliphatic di- and tri-carboxylic acid esters having from four to about thirty carbon atoms; sorbic acid ester, 3,8-nonadienyl acid ester, oleic acid ester, linolenic acid ester and ricinoleic acid ester; or copolymers of at least one thereof with another copolymerizable unsaturated monomer; and synthetic resin compositions having improved light stability comprising per 100 parts by weight of resin from 0.001 to 10 parts by weight of the polymeric light stabilizer.

    A highly basic lithium sulphonate, having a TBN of at least 250 mgKOH/g is prepared by heating a mixture of lithium hydroxide monohydrate and a solvent to remove water as an azeotrope of water and said solvent prior to formation of the lithium salt of the sulphonic acid and subsequently overbasing with carbon dioxide.

    A process for making an oil solution of a highly basic sodium sulphonate which comprises (a) heating sodium hydroxide with an alkoxyalkanol and a solvent to remove as an azeotrope with alkoxyalkanol and said solvent a controlled amount of water formed in the reaction of part of the sodium hydroxide with the alkoxyalkanol; (b) adding to the mixture an organic sulphonic acid so as to react with a part of the sodium hydroxide and form the sodium salt of the sulphonic acid and water; (c) thereafter introducing carbon dioxide into the reaction mixture so as to react with the basic sodium compounds therein; (d) removing solvent by distillation; and (e) adding base oil to the process during one of steps (b), (c) or (d) so that the desired product is obtained, in which the amount of alkoxide produced in step (a) is controlled by the azetropic removal of water in that step such that the amount of water produced in step (b) and (c) is not greater than the amount stoichiometrically required to hydrolyse the alkoxide.

    Poly (C₅ - C₉ lactone) adducts are made by reacting a C₅ - C₉ lactone with an aminated hydrocarbyl substituted C₄ - C₁₀ monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid producing material, e.g. a polyisobutenyl succinimide, which, in turn, preferably is made by reacting a polymer of a C₂ to C₁₀ monoolefin, preferably polyisobutylene, having a molecular weight of about 700 to 5,000 with a C₄ to C₁₀ monunsaturated acid, anhydride or ester, preferably maleic anhydride, such that there are about 0.7 to 2.00 dicarboxylic acid producing moieties per molecule of said olefin polymer used in the reaction mixture, and then reacting the substituted acid, anhydride or ester with an amine. The resulting adducts are useful per se as oil soluble dispersant additives. They are also useful in fuel and lubricating oil compositions, as well as in concentrates and additive packages.
