A facile method for the regioselectivesynthesis of tetrasubstituted pyrroles, from readily accessible 1,3-dicarbonyls, benzoin derivatives and ammonium acetate, has been developed. The one-potthree-component reactions were performed to afford tetrasubstituted pyrroles under solvent- and catalyst-freeconditions.

The thermal reaction of N-[(3-oxo-2-cyclohexenyl)imino]triphenylphosphorane with α-bromoketones and α,β-unsaturated ketones underwent an enamine-type alkylation and a subsequent aza-Wittig reaction to give substituted 1,5,6,7-tetrahydro-4H-indol-4-ones and 7,8-dihydro-5(6H)-quinolinones albeit in modest yields.
