    t-Butyl 2,4,5-trichlorophenyl carbonate, conveniently prepared from phosgene in two stages, reacts cleanly with amino-acids in the presence of bases to give N-t-butoxycarbonyl amino-acids (and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol) in excellent yield. By co-extraction of the N-t-butoxycarbonyl amino-acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol from the acidified reaction mixture, followed by treatment of the extracts with NN′-

    A method for purifying 1,1-bis(4'-hydroxy-3'-methylphenyl)cyclohexane comprises dissolving said 1,1-bis(4'-hydroxy-3'-methylphenyl)cyclohexane in a first solvent consisting essentially of an alcohol to form a first solution; filtering said first solution; adding a second solvent consisting essentially of water to the filtered first solution to form a second solution, wherein said second solution comprises about 40 parts to about 95 parts of the first solvent per 100 parts of the combined weight of the first and second solvents; crystallizing said 1,1-bis(4'-hydroxy-3'-methylphenyl)cyclohexane from said second solution to form a first crystalline product; dissolving said first crystalline product in a third solvent to form a third solution, wherein the third solvent comprises an aromatic compound; and crystallizing said 1,1-bis(4'-hydroxy-3'-methylphenyl)cyclohexane from said third solution to produce a second crystalline product.

    Disclosed herein are silicone resins comprising structural units of the formulae: and at least one structural unit selected from the group consisting of: where “A” is a spacer group comprising C 2 to C 50 alkyl groups; “B” and “C” are spacer groups comprising C 2 to C 20 alkyl groups; “M 1 ” comprises a Group III element; R 1 , R 3 , R 6 , and R 7 independently comprise OH, alkyl groups, or alkoxy groups; R 2 and R 4 independently comprise hydrogen, alkali metal, or alkyl groups; and R 5 comprises a alkyl group. Methods for preparing these silicone resins are also disclosed. The silicone resins are useful as catalysts for producing bisphenols.
