    A coating composition, in both its uncrosslinked and crosslinked forms, for use in increasing the static friction of a surface of a delivery system comprising a medical device having a surface in contact with the surface of a delivery component, the static friction of the surface being increased in an amount sufficient to substantially maintain the position of the medical device on the delivery component against forces asserted on the delivery system as it navigates through a vessel of the body. The delivery system may comprise a balloon catheter as the delivery component and a stent as the medical device. A composition includes a polyether monomer, such as an alkoxy poly(alkylene glycol), a carboxylic acid-containing monomer, such as (meth)acrylic acid, optionally a photoderivatized monomer, and a hydrophilic monomer such as (meth)acrylamide.

    A polyacrylamide type gel medium for electrophoresis is conveniently and safely prepared prior to use from a kit which comprises (1) a water-soluble copolymer of an acrylamide monomer and at least one comonomer copolymerizable therewith, which comonomer contains functional groups that permit crosslinking of said copolymer by a covalent but non-free radical initiated mechanism; and (2) a selected crosslinking agent in a package that separates it from the copolymer. Optionally, additional materials that may be usefully incorporated in the gel may be included in the kit, for example, a selected electrophoresis buffer and a complexing agent, such as SDS. The kit is used to prepare the gel by forming a solution of the copolymer in deionized water at the desired concentration of copolymer, adding a sufficient amount of any optional ingredients to provide the desired concentrations thereof, adding such concentration of the crosslinking agent as will provide a gelation time of between 5 minutes and 15 hours, and pouring the so prepared reaction mixture into a preselected mold or casting device or onto a support so as to form the resulting gel into the desired shape and size.

    Diluent and wash compositions are useful in a rapid and sensitive assay for detecting antibodies, and especially retroviral antibodies, in a biological specimen. The diluent composition is buffered to a pH of 6 to 10 and includes a protein or carbohydrate, a surfactant and a negatively-charged organic compound. The wash composition is buffered to a pH of 5 to 10 and includes a surfactant. These compositions can be included in a diagnostic kit. The method of this invention includes mixing the biological specimen with the diluent composition, forming an immunological complex between ligand and antibodies in the specimen and separating complexed materials from uncomplexed materials using a filtration membrane and a washing step. An enzyme labeled anti-antibody is added to form a ligand-antibody-antibody complex followed by its detection using suitable reagents.
