Phenylhydrazine reacts with S-methylisothionitrourea to give 2-phenylhydrazino-N2-nitroformamidine, which on oxidation and nitration affords novel arylazo-and arylazoxy-N2-nitroformamidines. The structures of the products were confirmed by H-1, C-13, and N-14 NMR.
