The initial photooxygenation and butenolide synthesis have been merged with subsequent photoredox reactions to achieve rare dual-photocatalyst cascades affording various fused butyrolactones. Ground state Lewis acid activity for methylene blue has been unveiled and then exploited in the synthesis of substituted cyclopentanones
