    The first example of a diaryl zwitterionic iodonium compound having the anionic function directly on the aromatic ring is described. Compound 2. Ph-I(+)-C6H4-4-SO2N(-)SO2CF3, is obtained in excellent yield and its X-ray structure was determined. 2 and the many analogues that can be prepared have excellent potential as photoacid generators (PAGs) in microlithography.     Direct methylation of imidazole using methylated difunctional or tetrafunctional perfluorosulfonyl imides renders excellent yields of the corresponding room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). This methodology provides a simple, halide-free route to several novel RTILs containing multifunctional perfluorosulfonyl imide anions.

    The present invention provides compounds represented by the formula Y +− N(SO 2 R f )(CF 3 ). Such a compound can be manufactured through a reaction between M +− N(SO 2 R f )(CF 3 ) and Y +− B. The present invention also provides compounds represented by the formula Y +− N(SO 2 R f )(CN). Such a compound can be manufactured through a reaction between M +− N(SO 2 R f )(CN) and Y +− B. R f in the above formulae is a perfluoroalkyl group. Y + is an organic or inorganic cation. − B is an organic or inorganic anion. M + is an alkali metal cation or a silver cation.

    Lithium, sodium and potassium N-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)trifluoromethanesulfinimidates were obtained by the reaction of the corresponding sulfinimidoyl chloride with alkali metal trimethylsilanolates. The potassium and sodium salts were converted to the free acid, having predominantly the amidic tautomeric structure, CF3S(O)NHSO2CF3, by treatment with concentrated H2SO4 or with H+-cationite.
