  N-3-Aminoalkyl propionamides with an ether substituent on the beta carbon atom are prepared by the reaction of analogous N-3-oxohydrocarbon-substituted amides with an amine in the presence of a reducing agent, preferably hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst. The resulting compounds can be converted to acrylamides by pyrolysis in the presence of a strong base. The latter compounds may also be prepared by the reaction of a .beta.,.gamma.-unsaturated amine with an acrylonitrile in the presence of sulfuric acid. They are useful for improving dyeability of fiber-forming polymers and may be polymerized to form compositions which are useful in paper manufacture and (in their quaternized form) are excellent flocculants.

  An improved soft contact lens material, existing as a hydrogel, is formed by a polymer containing a fluorinated monomer, a hvdroxyalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and an N-vinyl lactam.   A melt kneaded mixture is formed of, by wt, (A) 100 parts of a poly-α-olefin (e.g. polypropylene); (B) 1 to 20 parts of an ethylene copolymer having a melt index as defined in JIS-6760 at 190°C of 1 to 1,000 g/10 mins, produced by high pressure continuous poly­merization with a free radical catalyst of (a) 40 to 95% of ethylene and (b) 5 to 60% of at least one dialkylaminoalkyl acrylamide comonomer represented by the formula: wherein R₁ is H or -CH₃; R₂ and R₃ each is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl; and n is 2 to 4;       and optionally up to 20 wt% of an unsaturated ester (C) 0 to 3 parts of at least one alkali metal salt of a C7-24 organic carboxylic acid (e.g. a stearate); and optionally other additives. This composition can be melt spun into fibers or fabricated into other products, all of which are easily dyed especially with anionic dyes, alone or with other fibers.
