A process for producing a p-hydroxyneophyl m-phenoxybenzyl ether represented by the general formula (II) ##STR1## (X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 are independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom) by subjecting a corresponding p-alkoxyneophyl m-phenoxybenzyl ether represented by the general formula (I) ##STR2## (R represents a lower alkyl group, and X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 have the same definitions as above) to ether cleavage, in which process the ether cleavage reaction is effected in an aprotic polar solvent, using a lower alkoxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal or using a metal hydroxide in the presence of a lower alcohol.
通过在无水极性溶剂中使用碱金属或碱土金属的较低烷氧化物,或在存在较低醇的情况下使用金属氢氧化物,将由通用式(I)表示的相应的p-烷氧基新亚基m-苯氧基苄醚(R代表较低烷基,X.sub.1和X.sub.2具有与上述相同的定义)进行醚解离,从而制备由通用式(II)表示的p-羟基新亚基m-苯氧基苄醚(X.sub.1和X.sub.2独立地为氢原子或卤原子)的方法。
