Synthesis of phosphonic acid ester functionalized arene chromium tricarbonyl complexes

The thermal reaction of Cr(CO)6 with (a) diethyl phenylphosphonate and (b) tetraethyl α,α′-p-xylenediphosphonate gives the arene complexes [η6-C6H5(PO3Et2)]Cr(CO)2 (1a, 34%) and [η6-p-C6H4(CH2PO3Et2)2]Cr(CO)3 (1b, 46%). The spectroscopic properties of 1a and 1b are studied in detail. Reactions of 1a and 1b with bromotrimethylsilane give [η6-C6H5(PO3(SiMe3)2)]Cr(CO)3 (2a) and [η6-p-C6H4(PO3(CH2SiMe3)2)2]Cr(CO)3
