A process for preparing acryloyl carbamates or ureas by reacting β-haloalkanoyl chlorides with carbamate or urea compounds is described. Reaction takes place in the presence of specific basic compounds which function as traps for the hydrogen halides produced during reaction. By means of the process according to the invention, the disadvantages of the prior art, especially with regard to safety and protection of the environment, are reduced. The compounds which can be prepared according to the invention are suitable as monomers for preparing addition copolymers.
