A series of d(10) metal complexes [Cd(L)(2)(CH3OH)(2)](ClO4)(2))(infinity) (L = N,N'-di(3-pyridyl)oxamide), 1, [Zn(L)(2)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2)center dot 2H(2)O}(infinity), 2, [ZnCl2(L)center dot 2DMF center dot C4H10O](infinity), 3, [ZnX2(L)center dot 2DMF](infinity) (X = Br, 4 and I, 5), [HgCl2(L)](infinity), 6, [HgBr2(L)center dot 2DMF](infinity), 7, and Hg2I4(L)(2), 8 have been prepared by the reactions of M(II) salts (M = Zn, Cd and Hg) with L, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1 and 2 form 10 looped chains with 22-membered metallocycles and complexes 3, 4, 6 and 7 show 1D zigzag chains, while complex 5 exhibits a 1D concavo-convex chain and complex 8 displays a dinuclear metallocycle. Two types of ligand conformations, syn and anti, are adopted by the L ligands in these complexes. In the Zn(II) complexes 3-5 and Hg(II) complexes 6-8, the chloride and bromide anions play similar role in the crystal structures, while the iodide anion is distinct. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
