Fifteen homoallylic ketones have been synthesized in 26-77% yields on treatment of aromatic, aliphatic, and alpha-amino methyl carboxylates with excess vinylmagnesium bromide and catalytic amounts of a copper salt in THF. Alpha-amino homoallylic ketones derived from N-protected alpha-amino esters possessing aliphatic and alcohol side chains were synthesized in > or =98% enantiomeric purity. [reaction:

This invention relates generally to C—H activated ruthenium olefin metathesis catalyst compounds which are stereogenic at the ruthenium center, to their preparation, and the use of such catalysts in the metathesis of olefins and olefin compounds. In particular, the invention relates to the use of C—H activated ruthenium olefin metathesis catalyst compounds in Z-selective olefin metathesis reactions, enantio-selective olefin metathesis reactions, and enantio-Z-selective olefin metathesis reactions. The invention has utility in the fields of catalysis, organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, and industrial and fine chemicals chemistry.
The addition of Grignardreagents to ketones is significantly enhanced by cerium chloride with remarkable suppression of side reactions, particularly enolization. Some esters, which are prone to side reactions, also react readily with Grignardreagents in the presence of cerium chloride to give normal reaction products in reasonable to high yields.

Novel benzimidazolyl compounds which are basic compounds and have high polymerizability are disclosed. The basic compound of the present invention is prepared by reacting a vinylbenzaldehyde with an o-phenylenediamine compound, and can be used, for example, as a monomer for polymers. The benzimidazolylstyrene compounds are readily homopolymerized or copolymerized to provide linear homopolymers, linear copolymers or cross-linked copolymers having pendant benzimidazolylphenyl groups. These polymers have greater resistance to oxidation and chemicals than the homoiogues, and are useful as ion exchange resins, and as extractants of metals.
