gem-Bromonitro compounds or gem-dinitro compounds couple with carbanions derived from α-cyano sulfones or α-carbonyl sulfones to give β-nitro sulfones. The nitro and sulfonyl groups are eliminated from the coupling products on treatment with reductive one electron transfer reagents to give α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds or nitriles.

Abstract The sulfanylation of α-sulfonyl substituted lactone and thioesters and α-sulfinyl-substituted esters and thioesters, employing solid K2CO3, S-methyl methanethiosulfonate and TEBA, is reported. The results are compared with those in the homogeneous phase and in the non-catalytic two-phase system.

β-Phenylsulfonyldihydrofurans 1 were readily prepared by reduction of α-phenylsulfonyl-γ-lactones with DIBAL-H, followed by dehydration with MsCl-Et3N. Dihydrofurans 1 were deprotonated with n-BuLi and the resulting α-lithiated carbanion reacted with a wide variety of electrophiles. Ethyl phenylsulfonylacetate was treated with 1,2-dibromoethane in the presence of benzyltriethylammonium chloride and alkali to give 1-phenylsulfonylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid, from which the carbonyl chloride, ester, carboxamide, 1,2-diacylhydrazine, carbonyl azide, carbamate, isocyanate, and γ-butyrolactone derivatives were prepared.
