Synthesis and structures of triptycene-derived Tröger's base molecular clips

A series of triptycene-derived Troger's bases with molecular clip shaped structures have been conveniently and efficiently synthesized by one-pot condensation of corresponding amino-substituted triptycenes with paraformaldehyde in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid, and their structures have been characterized by NMR, MALDI-TOF MS spectra, elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A series of triptycene-derived Schiffbases were synthesized by condensation between amino triptycenes with an appropriate aldehyde and were isolated in good to excellent (85–90%) yields. We illustrate a new approach toward the synthesis of a porous supramolecular honeycomb based on triptycene. A coordination polymer has been prepared where the triptycene groups are linked through triptycenesemiquinonediimine platinum complexes, but the product is disordered rather than the intended honeycomb structure. A model platinum complex and its 15N-labeled isotopomer have been prepared and characterized.
