    aryl halide-containing β-aryl ketones and aldehydes can be synthesized directly from readily available allyic alcohols and boronic acids via palladium-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reactions. The dual roles of copper, including electron-carrier and Lewis acid functions, are supposed to be critical for the high reactivity and selectivity of this aerobic oxidative coupling transformation.

    In one aspect, this invention relates to production of useful fermentation end-products from biomass through simultaneous hydrolysis and fermentation by a microorganism, such as Clostridium phytofermentans . The invention also relates to the development of a process for efficient pretreatment and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to end-products with high conversion efficiency (yield).     Allylic alcohols, 1-buten-3-ol, 1-penten-3-ol and 1-octen-3-ol, reacted with aryl iodides (iodotoluene, 4-iodotoluene, 4-iodophenol and 4-iodanisole) under Heck reaction conditions to form corresponding saturated aryl ketones in one step.
