An electrode for determining the lithium content of a liquid sample to be tested, has a membrane containing a lithium ion selective compound and a plasticizer, the improvement wherein the plasticizer is a liquid, lipophilic dialkyl phthalate compound or a liquid phenyl phenyl ether compound that has a strong electron withdrawing group at an ortho position on one of the phenyl rings. The ion selective compound has the formula: ##STR1## wherein A is an alkyl group having between 8 and 16 carbon atoms, B is an alkyl group having between 1 and 4 carbon atoms, and each C and D is, independently, a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having between 1 and 16 carbon atoms, provided that both C and D are not alkyl groups having greater than 4 carbon atoms.

Catalyst for the stereospecific polymerization of alpha-olefins of 3 or more carbon atoms comprising an organoaluminium compound and a component prepared from halogen-containing compound of titanium(IV), organic electron donor, and a pretreatment product of components comprising magnesium alcoholate, Group II or IIIA metal alkyl, and optionally, one or more pretreatment modifiers such as a mineral acid or anhydride of sulfur, organometallic chalcogenide derivative of hydrogen sulfide, organic acid or organic acid ester. Preferably, the product obtained from such materials is contacted with liquid Lewis acid and mechanically activated prior to polymerization use.
Composition comprising a transition metal component and magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate. Composition can be prepared by reacting suspension of magnesium alcoholate with carbon dioxide to form a magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate and reacting magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate with transition metal component. When the suspending liquid comprises an alcohol, the magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate dissolves and is subsequently precipitated with an antisolvent comprising metal alkyl or transition metal halide. When the suspending liquid is substantially free of alcohol, the magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate suspension is reacted with metal alkyl and transition metal compound.
Composition comprising a transition metal component and magnesium carboxylate prepared by reacting a solution of hydrocarbyl magnesium compound with carbon dioxide to precipitate a magnesiumm carboxylate and reacting magnesium carboxylate with transition metal component.
