Polyolefins, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are rendered flame retardant by incorporating therein a combination of (1) a Diels-Alder adduct of a chlorinated cyclopentadiene and a polyunsaturated cycloaliphatic compound and (2) a ring-brominated aromatic compound.
Polyamide compositions, flame retarded using a halogenated organic flame retardant, are blended with a polymer blend resin which is at least partially incompatible with and has a lower melt viscosity than the polyamide, to improve the arc tracking resistance of the polyamide composition. The polyamide compositions are particularly useful in the manufacture of flame retarded electrical components.
Compositions comprising at least one adduct of perhalogenated cyclic conjugated dienes and olefinically-unsaturated dienophiles having a vinyl content in excess of 50 percent have been found to be unexpectedly effective adhesive systems for bonding a variety of elatomeric material, including vulcanizable and vulcanized natural and synthetic elastomer compositions, to themselves and other structural substrates.

A Diels-Alder adduct of a halogenated cyclic conjugated diene and a block copolymer of styrene and butadiene which is particularly useful in adhesive compositions. The Diels-Alder adduct has a halogen content of between about 30 and 45, preferably between about 34 and 40, percent by weight. The halogen content of the adduct is crucial to the performance of the adduct in adhesive compositions. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene is a preferred halogenated cyclic conjugated diene for preparing the adduct and either diblock or triblock styrene-butadiene copolymers may be utilized.
A one-coat adhesive composition which utilizes environmentally acceptable ingredients and which can withstand high temperature conditions such as those experienced during injection molding processes. The adhesive contains a Diels-Alder adduct of a perhalogenated cyclic conjugated diene and an olefinically unsaturated dienophile having a vinyl content in excess of 50 percent, a phenolic resin, an aromatic hydroxy compound, a formaldehyde donor, a heat-activated unsaturated elastomer crosslinker, a vulcanizing agent, and a metal oxide. An adhesive bond prepared with the adhesive is resistant to high temperature fluids and corrosive agents.
